New On-line Foundation Course starts soon

January 12, 2018 By: Chris G7DDN Category: Club, Training

Wythall Radio Club are pleased to announce an online Foundation course starting soon.

We think this kind of course is ideal for younger students or anyone who cannot make a regular classroom attendance – you study in your own time with support via posts from your tutor.

It is free to sign up and you get notifications via e-mail that course material and any quizzes are available for download. The course takes place over a 5 week period with two lessons per week.

We plan to begin on 5th March and complete the course by 13th April. There are a few practical assessments to do too and there is more information available here.

Meantime to register your interest, in the first instance, email our Training Co-ordinator Chris G0EYO at g0eyo@blueyonder.co.uk

8 years old & on the air!

Leanne & Sam present Harry with his new radio

Meet Wythall Radio Club Member Harry Bacon.

At the tender age of 8, Harry is currently the youngest member we have. Along with his dad, he recently passed his Foundation Exam and is now the proud holder of the shiny new callsign M6NKW.

A few days ago, Harry was congratulated by our friends (and Wythall Hamfest sponsors) from Radioworld.

On a trip up to their shop near Cannock, a very excited young man was presented with a new dual-band Handheld transceiver. (Click the photo for a larger picture).

Now Harry is looking forward to getting on the air and getting more experience before tackling the Intermediate License.

He is already learning Morse Code at our club Morse class and learning it very quickly, so we hear. We at Wythall Radio Club wish him all the best.

Listen out for Harry in our Club Christmas Contest from 26th December – you might even have a contact with him via our repeater GB3WL.

So left to right in the picture, it’s congratulations to Gary, Mike, Harry (aged 8!!), James, Neil, Andy, Ian and Sue.

Our thanks go to the WRC training team and our congratulations go to all 8 of the new licensees. We look forward to hearing the new callsigns on the air very soon!

Another Wythall Radio Club Winner!

October 24, 2017 By: Chris G7DDN Category: Club, Fun, News, Training

Further to the post about Mark M0LXQ below, it’s now the turn of another Wythall Radio Club member John M6KET, to be a winner!

Retired teacher John told us, “…just returned from a CW (Morse Code) Boot Camp run by the excellent Essex CW Club with some 30 delegates put through their paces by hardened professionals (well, keen amateurs!)”

“Honest feedback received on both my sending and receiving was handed out, as well as lectures on all things CW from keys to building your own speed monitor.”

“As I was the delegate who had travelled  the furthest, I won a CG Antenna PK-4 CW Pocket Keyer (sponsored by our friends from ML&S)”

John runs our well-known Morse Training Classes on Tuesday evenings here at Wythall and we congratulate him on a great day out and a new piece of kit for the shack!

Well done John!

Barry says he is now keen to start on the Advanced course which we are starting at the club soon.

All at WRC congratulate Barry on an excellent result and look forward to hearing more good news from him in December after the Advanced Exam.

Barry is pictured with his pass certificate with Head Trainer and Club President Chris G0EYO.

Five Gain Their Intermediate Licence

July 04, 2017 By: Chris G7DDN Category: Club, News, Training

It could be the title of an Enid Blyton book, but it’s actually the latest fantastic news from Wythall Radio Club’s Training Team!

After weeks of studying, all five candidates sat their Intermediate Exam at the Club last night. And it was great to hear that all five passed with flying colours.

So it’s congratulations from everyone at WRC to (from left to right in the photo) Jonathan M6JHX, Stuart M6HVF, Jonathan M6ITQ, Stuart M6SUD and Mike M6ILX, who will now all be upgrading their callsigns to 2E0 prefixes, just as soon as Ofcom let them!

Our thanks to all our Training Team, Invigilators and Tutors.

We now hope that these five will join our autumn Advanced course and go on to achieve the highest licensing level in the hobby.

Morse Maestro

July 03, 2017 By: Chris G7DDN Category: Club, Fun, News, Training

Wythall Radio Club member Jamie M0SDV is celebrating today.

He has been crowned the winner of this year’s Lew Williams Shield award.

Each May, we designate the month as our Morse Activity month and members are invited to show evidence of progress in learning and/or using the Code in the Radio hobby.

This year Jamie, (who is still only 16, even though he is tall!) was nominated the winner by the judging panel. This comes hot on the heels of him recently gaining his Full licence callsign a few months ago.

It’s been an exciting few weeks for the young man, who is pictured here at last weekend’s Field Day and BBQ, receiving his awards from judge Lee G0MTN.

Well done Jamie, from everyone at WRC!

Some good news this morning at Wythall Radio Club. One of our youngest members has gained his Advanced callsign.

16-year-old Jamie has been a member of Wythall Radio Club for a few years, starting with his Foundation Licence and then gaining his Intermediate quite soon afterwards.

The great news is he has just passed his Advanced exam and gained the full licence privileges that this gives.

We are looking forward to hearing his new callsign on the air soon, complete with the full 400 Watts of power!

Well done Jamie, from all of us at WRC.

Following our latest Online Foundation Course, we are pleased to announce we have 3 new members of the Amateur Radio fraternity.

We extend a congratulations and warm welcome to the hobby to Neal, Andy and Matt.

They completed their practical assessments yesterday and the final exam this lunchtime at the club – this was following a few weeks of online tuition from Chris G0EYO and our Training team.

We wish them all the best in the hobby and we look forward to seeing them at the club soon!
