Enid Blyton would be proud! Thanks to the Wythall Radio Club Training Team, there are 5 new entrants to our wonderful hobby today.
Our online Foundation Course is very popular these days and attracts people from all around the East and West Midlands.
Congratulations from the whole club then go to (left to right in the photo) David from Stratford-upon-Avon, Ian from Warwick (at rear), Ben (aged 10) from Swadlincote in Derbyshire and Kim from Stratford-upon-Avon. (Sadly Carl from Redditch is not pictured)
Our thanks as always to our training team and invigilators.
We are now looking towards May 13th & 14th when three more online Foundation students will be taking their practical assessments and examination. Watch this space!
Following a successful Foundation Licence Course run by the Wythall Radio Club Training Department, we now have three new entrants to the hobby.
Our congratulations to Barry Garrison, Marian Tonge & Stuart Griffiths. Our commiserations also go to Ed Smith, who was just one mark off passing the exam, held last night at the Club. A re-take should solve that though and then Ed can join his colleagues with their new callsigns.
Our thanks to Wythall Club members, Chris G0EYO, Roger M0GWM, Peter G4LWF, John G4OJL, Dave G3YXM and David G0ICJ for running the course & exam.
Perhaps our new licensees will be thinking of joining our next Intermediate Course, starting soon? Watch this space!
Wythall Radio Club are pleased to announce that we will soon be running an on-line course for those seeking to gain their Foundation Amateur Radio licence.
This might be ideal for younger students or perhaps those who cannot make a regular evening on our normal teaching nights.
With the online course, students can study in their own time with support from tutors.
The course will start on the 13th March and should be finished by 14th April.
Please note that there are a series of practical assessments which require your attendance at a registered centre – if you live in the West Midlands, then Wythall Radio Club will be organising a Practical Assessments workshop on Saturday 29th April, with a Foundation examination on Sunday 30th April.
More information is available on our training page or contact the Training Coordinator, Chris G0EYO via email at g0eyo(at)blueyonder.co.uk
From Training Co-ordinator Chris G0EYO…
“We still have a few places remaining for our January Foundation Class.
It starts on Monday 16th January taking place in the club rooms, 8pm-10pm for 7 Monday evenings. (If Monday nights do not work for you though, please note that we plan an online version of the course starting in late February/ early March. More news about that later.)
The fully inclusive fee for the classroom course is £40, payable before the start.
It is important that you are able to attend every session, as each week there is some compulsory practical work which has to be signed off before you can take the final exam.”

The September edition features news about an Online QSL request system run by club member Tim M0URX; G0MTN’s adventures in Meteor Scatter this summer; the trials of fitting a workable HF antenna in a small garden; news on 2E0SDV’s Expedition to the Orkney Isles for IOTA (while the rest of us had a BBQ in a field!) and the usual training updates and President’s letter.
It’s great read, so why not have a look at it now? Click here for more!
Before the British Summer comes to an end, the members of Wythall Radio Club are planning a day outside!
This Sunday we will be on the field at Wythall Park from 09:30 onwards having what we call a “Plug ‘n’ Play Day”.
This is where we invite you to bring along your portable set-ups to try out, test a new aerial if you like, or get some advice from some of our most experienced operators…
With HF and 2m contests on over the weekend, there will be plenty of stations to work. So why not charge up that old FT-817 or dig out your vintage gear or maybe bring your home-built QRP rig and join us?
Look for us behind the Scout Hut near the Rugby pitch at Wythall House B47 6LZ. The weather is set fair so it should be fun!
Latest news from our Training Department – there is to be an Advanced Licence course at Wythall Radio club this autumn.
It will take place every Monday evening in the Shack at Wythall House from September 5th onwards.
The exam is scheduled for Monday 12th December.
There will also be one Saturday morning practical set for 26th November.
The course runs over 15 weeks altogether and the total cost is £60 – this includes the course book, course materials and the exam fee and all other costs.
Anyone who wishes to do this course, please get in touch in the first instance with Chris via email on g0eyo(at)blueyonder.co.uk
And we wish you good luck!
More great news from the Wythall Radio Cub Training department.
This weekend, Club member David M6KND took his intermediate examination and passed. But what makes this particularly newsworthy is the fact that David is blind.
Just to put on the exam involves having extra people on hand – we thank our invigilators Ian M0IDR and Roger M0GWM, for example. But one of the hardest jobs was the one our Chair Anita 2E0DUO took on – the role of reader; David listens and then has to remember the question and the four possible answers before deciding on the correct one – just imagine doing that for yourself!
Apparently the whole process was quite exhausting for bother reader and candidate.
But what a fantastic result!
We fully expect David to enrol for Advanced class starting in September and we know this is going to challenge both candidate, tutors, invigilators and reader even more than it has up to now – but we are up for it!
Fantastic news from the Wythall Radio Club Training Team – we have yet another 100% success from our latest Intermediate Course.
Lead Trainer Chris G0EYO explains, “I am pleased to confirm that last night’s four candidates passed their Intermediate examination with excellent scores, one even got 100% but I won’t embarrass Stuart by mentioning his name!”
Chris continued, “My thanks to the training team and invigilators who ran the course & exam very professionally as always. Click on the pic for the smiling faces.”
All four have expressed an interest in doing our Advanced Course starting this September.
